Craigends
NS423664 (4*) Off-Roaders Only!

'It is across the River Gryffe. We decided not to tackle it on bicycles today, although I think we did do this some years ago, presumably when the river was a bit dryer!'

Gartness Ford
NS503859 (2*) Off-Roaders Only!
Sent in by Timothy Oliver (15/02/2004)

'For years I have driven passed the following 2 fords and never tried to use them other than when I was a kid on a push bike. The main ford (Image 1) is getting overgrown and the approach lane on the east side has had some rubble tipped on it but that would not stop a Land Rover. The west approach is a clear but muddy farm track. There is an alternative route about 100 yards south via another ford (Image 2), however this invovles crossing a field rather than using the official lanes. There is a recently rebuilt wooden footbridge between both fords. The proper ford is about 2 feet deep - within wading depth of a Defender, but because of the sandy approaches on either side would certainly not be suitable for a small 4x4 or saloon car. As I was by myself I didn't even attempt it this afternoon - I would want to put my mud tyres on the Defender and have another one with a winch standing by on the opposite bank just incase.

There are no depth gauges or any other depth indication. The river bed at the main ford is fine gravel and the approach "ramps" are sand. '
